It was a dark and stormy night . . .oh, wait, it was a cold morning when we met Captain Tommy on the dock in Rockport to board the Skimmer and visit the whooping cranes at the Rockport refuge and breeding grounds. We were encouraged to know that their numbers were increasing despite the losses during the recent Florida storm.

I can testify that the wind was amazing at 7:00 in the morning - brrrr.

Any whoopers yet?

Captain Tommy presses on into the cold and wind.

Aha! A whooper family. Captain Tommy describes their nesting habits and the behavior of the juvenile birds.

The juvenile whooper on the right looks as if he wants to make a break for it.

Bunny enjoys the lovely but windy day - the whoopers make it worth the trip!

What fun to see birds that were so endangered make a great comeback!

After a last lunch together, we say goodbye until next time - thanks, everyone! It was great to see the whooping cranes together again!
