Garden Journal, 2008

The garden has not had the attention it usually gets, but there are a few bright spots here and there. Here are some photos of what's going on right now in early May.

The small water garden with elephant ears and irises - geraniums and a miniature rose are in pots behind it.

The larger koi pond - papyrus and lizards' tail plants have taken off like crazy this spring

Herbs - basil, mint and sage - and a citrus tree that has yet to produce fruit

Sweet 100 tomato plants in the stock tank garden by the back fence.

Esperanza and tomato plants by the back gate.

The Kaffir Lime tree is at least nine feet tall, and the shallots are flowering.

Celebrity tomatoes - not doing too well because of the pervasive drought.

Ginger, lemongrass, and two kinds of basil are potted up by the Vitex tree

Closer look at the basil, which really loves the full sun

So there's very little real produce for this spring, but it's still fun to see all of the herbs growing and doing well. Next year, I plan to try some new squash varieties that I learned about at the new Farmers' Market at our Botanical Garden this morning!
