The Becker Vineyards Lavender Festival

July is hot, hot, HOT in South Texas, but one of the newer enticements for a weekend road trip is the Becker Lavender Festival near Fredricksburg, Texas. This is a great event for anyone with an interest in herbs and wine. Here is some information on the vineyard, which co-owner Bunny Becker had given us on an earlier tour:

The vineyard, completed in 1995 prior to the first grape harvest, is a replica of the original 19th century German limestone barn standing beside a log cabin built in 1890. That original log cabin was renovated into The Homestead Bed and Breakfast and is surrounded by fields of lavender, wildflowers, and the vineyards (http://www.beckervineyards.com/) There are 36 acres of French vinifera grapes planted in the vineyard with Bordeaux and Rhone varieties such as viognier, syrah, grenache, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon and more to make Bordeaux-style wines with. Each vintage is aged in both French and American oak barrels in the largest underground wine cellar in Texas at Becker Vineyards.

Here are two pages of photos from the Lavender Festival. It's a unique event. There are lectures, herb vendors, and a lavender luncheon which features a lavender-themed menu. What an enjoyable (but hot) afternoon!

Michael heads up the path toward the Becker Vineyard's shop and tasting room. The temperature may have been close to 100 F, but there was shade and good company to be found.

Inside the limestone building, the winery staff was helpful in explaining the history of the vineyards.

We decided to join the herb vendors and crafts people under the oak trees next to the winery.

Mary Dunforth, fellow Herb Society member, was giving a lecture and demonstration on lavender as we arrived.

Lavender products were everywhere - I continue to be amazed at the therapeutic properites of this plant!

Aha - lavender art (or not)
