The Arts and Letters Award
from the
Friends of the San Antonio Public Library

I am incredibly honored to be one of three recipients of the 2003 Arts and Letters Award from a group that I hold near and dear, the Friends of the San Antonio Public Library. It is particularly meaningful since the other recipients, Maria Watson Pfeiffer and Richard Rosen, are people whose work I have admired for years in our arts, historical and literary community. The most wonderful part of the occasion for me was to have my son, Rick Riordan, introduce me - he had such good things to say that it made me proud to be the mother of this acclaimed fiction writer! Here are some photographs from that event - I smile when I think about being recognized as a small part of the literary and cultural community that makes San Antonio so unique.

The award is described this way: "First presented in 1972, the Arts and Letters Awards recognize and celebrate achievement by individuals whose demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in the arts and letters have served to enrich the literary, artistic, and cultural life of San Antonio."

Me with my (wonderful) grandson, Haley, as well as Barbara, the President of the Friends of the San Antonio Public Library, and my son, Rick Riordan, who was kind enough to introduce me.

I am in awe of the other recipients of this award. Richard Rosen is a theatre legend in San Antonio and does a wonderful job of bringing quality productions to the San Antonio stage through Magick Theatre. And Maria Watson Pfeiffer is hugely respected in her work with historical San Antonio and the Conservation Society - I have been a special fan of hers since I learned that she lead tours of historical cemeteries!
