Whooper Weekend in Rockport

We spent a wonderful weekend at our Rockport house the last weekend in February, and our main goal was to see the whooping cranes at the Aransas Refuge. Each year from late-October to mid-April, the only wild flock of whooping cranes in the world makes its long journey south from Canada to winter in the protected habitat of Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. As recently as the 1940's, only sixteen birds remained. Now, there are at least 248.

The Skimmer takes you up close and personal to their nesting areas. Captain Tommy and his wife Darcy are wonderful and knowledgeable hosts. All of us who went highly recommend this trip.

Yikes, it's really foggy, and guests are arriving in a couple of hours.

Michael pulls in the net and finds a few bait shrimp.

It's on to the Skimmer - cozy and comfortable.

Every year about this time, abandoned crab traps have a ten day grace period, then they are gone and their crabs are releases. Here's one with four or five crabs that were released.
