LENISE PEREZ-MILLER
I have attached a file containing my work for the committee to review. Please note that some images include a "Side A" and "Side B" to show both the front and back of the pieces. The selection includes work previously on view at SAALM and ranges from ceramic and vintage doily sculptures to 3D wall pieces and assemblage work.
Artist Statement
My artistic practice is grounded in a tactile, hands-on methodology. In my mixed media works, I intentionally incorporate a wide range of materials, including clay, plastic and fabric, to explore diverse textures that generate complex layers of color, form, and dimension. This initiates a process involving assemblage, painting, and resin application, effectively merging two-dimensional and three-dimensional elements. The use of resin enhances chromatic intensity, introduces depth, and creates transparency.
The creative process holds significant importance for me, providing not only tranquility but also facilitating a connection with both my inner self and the external environment. As each piece develops, it evolves organically, shaped by my selection of materials and contributing to my overarching vision.
Bio
I am a contemporary mixed media artist exploring the connections between memory, identity, and landscape. Born in Falfurrias, Texas, near the border, I draw inspiration from the layered textures of cultural exchange and lived experience.
After twenty years as an art educator, I now focus on my studio practice in Boerne, Texas, where my husband and I built a studio and host ceramic workshops for our community. My work has been exhibited at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Art Ceramic Competition & International Symposium and the San Antonio Art League and Museum’s 96th Annual Juried Artist Exhibition. Permanent collections include University Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital, Northeast Lakeview College STEM Building, and three resin doily pieces acquired for the new University Health Retama Clinic, opening in 2027.
