About Lyn Belisle: Artmaker
I think of myself first as an artmaker.
For more than five decades, I have maintained an active studio practice while teaching, mentoring, and advocating for artists. My work has appeared in solo and group exhibitions since the 1970s and can be found in private and public collections throughout the United States and Europe.
My creative journey began as an art major in college and evolved through many forms of making: pottery, painting, fiber art, encaustic, assemblage, collage, and mixed media. Along the way, I taught art in public schools, colleges, and universities, always returning to the studio as the place where questions, discoveries, and transformations could unfold.
That long and varied experience allows me to move comfortably between the roles of studio artist, educator, and creative guide. Each informs the others. Teaching has sharpened my understanding of process and possibility; making art has kept me curious, humble, and willing to experiment.
The hours I spend in the studio are precious. My work emerges from intuition tempered by discipline, from curiosity balanced by craft. I am drawn to fragments, stories, memory, and transformation. The resulting pieces are often layered and enigmatic—part artifact, part invention—inviting viewers to discover their own meanings within them.
Whether I am creating assemblages from found objects, building collaged surfaces, or exploring new materials and techniques, I remain fascinated by the act of making itself. Art, for me, is both a practice of attention and a way of understanding the world.
