These faces from Earthshards are created from natural earthen clay dug from the ground, fired to a temperature of 1900F, and hand-finished individually with natural walnut ink and metallic enhancements. Unlike similar items made from air-dry clay that is unfired and plastic-based, these earthenware faces bring the feel and complexity of hand-built artisanship to your spirit dolls and other hand-crafted items, and will last for decades.
This is a sampler of three of my shard faces - one is Rune and Relic, which looks like an ancient artifact, one is the Celtic Forge finish, which is metallic and lustrous, and the other is the Mesa Verde finish, a turquoise matrix surface. These evocative fired earthenware faces were made in my studio from press molds that I create in clay from weathered old statues and monuments in historical sculpture gardens and cemeteries.
You will receive three faces - one Mesa Verde turquoise and matrix effect, one enhanced with an iridescent Celtic Forge finish, and one with the popular Rune & Relic finish which has the look of ancient clay runes. Sizes range from about 1.75”-2.5" and will vary because each piece is individually crafted.
Artisans use them in many ways – for Spirit Doll and assemblage, as closures for journals, for mixed-media jewelry – your imagination is the only limit. Each face is made from fired ucold-finished clay. The Celtic Forge faces have a special wax-based iridescent finish much like Raku. The Rune and Relic faces are enhanced with natural Walnut Ink. They are as permanent and sturdy as mosaic tile, small and strong. All are fired to 1900F (Cone 05). Your shard faces will be similar, but not necessarily these exact ones as each is unique.
You will be purchasing three unique handcrafted faces - no two are alike. Let me know any preference when you check out, or feel free to convo me with questions. I think that when you receive these, you will see a story and an inspiration in every face – I do! I invite you to send me pictures of how you use them in your own creative practice.
Thanks for looking!!
