The San Antonio Art League + Museum mourns the passing of longtime member and celebrated artist Gordon Talmadge Wedmore “Val” Alexander, Jr., who died on April 22, 2025.
A native of Corpus Christi and a gifted realist painter, Val studied art from an early age and went on to win numerous awards in competitive Texas exhibitions. He joined the San Antonio Art League in the 1960s, where he made a lasting impression by winning the prestigious Onderdonk Purchase Prize two years in a row. Val was also an early gallery owner on the Riverwalk during Hemisfair and later channeled his creativity into architectural design, creating over 50 distinctive homes across South Texas. Val will be remembered for his artistic contributions, his stories, and his deep knowledge of art and design. Memorials may be made in his honor to the San Antonio Art League + Museum.
Donations in Val’s memory will honor his enduring legacy by supporting the San Antonio Art League + Museum’s efforts to preserve the permanent collection he helped shape, foster emerging Texas artists, and celebrate the kind of creativity and excellence he so generously shared.
Val Alexander was one of our honored artists in the January 2025 Exhibition featuring the Onderdonk Purchase Prize through the decades. He is pictured below at the exhibition with his award-winning painting, Lucy, and on the right with his friend and fellow painter, Frank Hein. We will miss him!
Val and Terry Gay Puckett were honored as the Art League's patrons for 2029 for their contributions to the arts.
