These new earthenware wall pieces are an exploration of some of my favorite collage techniques translated through fired clay "shards." The components are mixed and matched until they seem right, then joined with sinew and adorned with trade beads, sticks, and found objects. The fired clay is finished with cold media - walnut ink, metallic wax and dry pigment.
Women reflect the intricately textured shards of experience that we collect throughout our life's journey. We have the power to honor all of them, good or bad, and fit them together with strength and beauty. They are ours, and they are unique.
I want to thank Shannon Weber for the inspiration she gave me regarding joining objects together by binding and wrapping without adhesives.
